HIGHLIGHTS: A TASTE OF EVIL

A Taste of Evil
(The Hani’s Daughter Mysteries)
by N.L. Holmes

Blurb:

In Tutankhamen’s Egypt, the vizier’s head cook dies suspiciously, and it looks like murder to Neferet and Bener-ib. Only, who would want to kill a cook, a man admired by all?

Perhaps he has professional rivals or a jealous wife. But she is the longtime cook of Neferet’s family, a dear retainer above reproach. Was her husband the good man he seemed to be, or did he have the shady past our two sleuths begin to suspect?

They’d better find out soon before the waters of foreign conspiracy rise around Neferet and her diplomat father. If they can’t find the killer, it could mean war with Egypt’s enemy, Kheta — and someone else could die. Maybe one of our nosy sleuths…

GUEST POST: HISTORICAL BACKDROP TO A TASTE OF EVIL

Unlike its predecessor series, The Lord Hani Mysteries, the Hani’s Daughter series involves relatively little of the great movements of history. Neferet is a private citizen, and although she used to work at the palace, she no longer does, confining her medical service to the working-class people of her dispensary’s neighborhood. But in A Taste of Evil, there does turn out to be a foreign connection that references the real historical situation in the formerly-great kingdom of Mitanni (or, as the Egyptians would say, Naharin). Here’s a little background.

Naharin/Mitanni was one of the great world powers, along with Egypt and the Hittite Empire, from the 16th century BCE to the middle of the 14th century BCE, when our story takes place. In the previous generation, the country had been divvied up by the Hittites on one side and the rising Assyrian power on the other. The rump state left was ruled by a king named Tushratta. He was challenged by his cousin, who was supported by the Hittites, but Tushratta’s kingdom had long enjoyed a close relationship with Egypt—first his sister then his daughter had married King Amenhotep III and been passed down to Amenhhotep’s son Akhenaten. The ill-fated younger princess was featured in The Lord Hani Mysteries
